He was inspired by the luxurious luggage carried by travelers at the Savoy Hotel in London, and he began incorporating the sophisticated designs with the diligent Florentine craftsmanship he grew up around to create his own designs. He sold leather bags and luggage in the 1920s, and in the following decade, the first retail shop for the house of Gucci was established on the Via Condotti in Rome. The brand grew during the first half of the 20th century. In World War II when leather was a rarity, the brand remained popular by developing products out of hemp, linen and jute.
